The mayor's office did not do a study on whether or not Granada needs more taxis. That is what the taxistas were protesting. It is likely the mayor decided to sell the 180 medallions (60 a year for 3 years) to raise the money to fix the streets in the barrios because bocoodles of us who live in the barrios have been complaining to his office. And, it is not likely that a feasibility study would show that we need more taxis. The streets are crowded with them now, and many of them can't make a good living. While it is true that lot's are rude and some (who are not legal) overcharge, there are many whom I know personally who are very decent. Of those I know, most are not Sandinista and I don't think that politics entered into the strike. I also spoke with several who told me they had nothing to do with the thugs who caused the trouble and were as shocked as anyone.
